Retin-A Medication Overview – Acne Treatment Gel/Cream

Retin-A (tretinoin topical) is a prescription topical cream that is enriched with vitamin A and is used to treat patients who are suffering from teenage acne and adult acne.

Why do Adults get Acne?

Adults get acne for the same reasons that anyone else gets acne: dirt and bacteria that become lodged deep in the skin pores. When the body fights off these bacteria it sends white blood cells to the pores to kill the bacteria and to force out the dirt. This results in the forming of pustules and blackheads.

Acne Solutions:

There are a variety of different acne solutions that you can choose to take, here are just a few:

• Over-the-counter salicylic topical applications
• Specialized cleansers and face washes
• Prescription medications such as Retin-A

Foods to Avoid with Acne:

When you are trying to treat your acne and get rid of it, you want to also watch out for certain foods that are prone to causing acne. Here are some foods that you should try and avoid:

• Oily and greasy foods
• Sodas and high sugar drinks
• Alcoholic beverages

How does Retin-A Work?

Retin-A works by supercharging the skin with vitamin A, which helps to fight off the bacteria that causes acne and also works to improve the appearance and the health of the skin.

Side effects to Retin-A Include:

It is not uncommon to experience some minor skin irritations when using Retin-A, however if they persist make sure to let your doctor know about them.

• Tingling
• Itching
• Redness
• Swelling
• Dryness
• Peeling
• Irritation
• In rare very cases a serious allergic reaction can occur which may involve the following symptoms: shortness of breath; or swelling of the face, throat, tongue and or lips. If you experience any of these serious side effects—STOP using Retin A and seek emergency medical treatment

What Medications Interact with Clarinex and are there any Precautions?

It is very important that you make sure that you let your doctor know about ALL of the drugs that you are currently taking including any acne medications, lotions or ointments, to best avoid experiencing an interaction. Those who are currently taking drugs containing thiazide diuretic, tetracycline antibiotics, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, sulfonamide antibiotics; or a phenothiazine; or women that are pregnant or who are nursing, will not be able to use Retin-A. This drug can make the skin sensitive to sunlight, always make sure that you wear at least an SPF 15 rated sun screen to protect your skin and make sure that you avoid extreme weather conditions.
